The four terms in one table
| Term | Stands for | Goal | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimisation | Rank your pages in Google and Bing results | The list of blue links and local map results |
| AEO | Answer engine optimisation | Be the direct answer to a question | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, AI answer boxes |
| GEO | Generative engine optimisation | Be mentioned or cited when an AI tool writes an answer | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and similar tools |
| AIO | AI Overviews (or AI optimisation) | Appear in, or be cited by, the AI summary at the top of Google | The AI Overview box above Google's normal results |
SEO: still the foundation
SEO is the work of making your site easy for search engines to crawl and worth showing: fast pages, clear titles, useful content, good links and accurate business details. Every other term in this guide builds on it. A page that search engines cannot find or trust is very unlikely to be quoted by an AI tool either.
AEO: write the answer first
People now ask full questions, by typing, by voice and in chat. AEO means writing so a machine can lift a clean answer from your page. Put the answer in the first one or two sentences under a question-style heading, then add detail below it. Short definitions, tables, numbered steps and FAQs all help, as long as they match what is visible on the page.
Ask the question your customer would ask, answer it in two plain sentences, then explain. That structure suits snippets, voice answers and AI summaries alike.
GEO: be worth mentioning
GEO is a newer term, popularised by a 2023 research paper on generative engines. It is about being named, quoted or linked when an AI tool writes a reply. These tools combine what they learned in training with live web results, so being clearly described on your own site and mentioned on other trusted sites both matter. Our guide on getting mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI search has a practical checklist.
AIO: two meanings, so check which one you mean
In Google's world, AIO often means AI Overviews, the generated summary above the results. In wider use, people also say AIO for "AI optimisation". For AI Overviews, Google's own guidance says its usual SEO basics apply and that no special markup is required, so the practical work is the same: helpful pages, clear structure and trustworthy details.
What changes when AI answers appear
- Some searches end without a click. A good answer shown on the results page may be enough for the searcher, so visibility and brand recall matter alongside traffic.
- Citations are the new rankings for some queries. Being the source an AI tool names can send visitors who are already well informed.
- Your brand must be easy to describe. If your site, directories and social pages say different things, tools may describe you wrongly.
- Reporting needs a wider view. Track impressions, branded searches and enquiries, not only organic sessions.
What to do first: a six-step order
- Fix the basics. Make sure key pages are crawlable, indexed, fast on mobile and listed in your sitemap.
- Rewrite service pages answer-first. Open each section with the direct answer to the question a buyer asks.
- Add FAQs and structured data that match the visible text. See our schema markup guide.
- Keep your business details identical everywhere: name, address, phone, services and founder names.
- Earn mentions on other sites: directories, reviews, local press and partner pages.
- Refresh content on a schedule and show the last-updated date.
An honest caution: nobody can guarantee a place in an AI answer, and each tool behaves differently and changes often. Treat AEO, GEO and AIO as extensions of good SEO, not replacements. If you want a second opinion on where your site stands, our free audit covers it.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO: what each means: questions answered
What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in search results. AEO aims to make a page the direct answer to a specific question, so it can appear as a snippet, a voice answer or an AI-generated summary. AEO is a way of writing and structuring pages on top of SEO.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI tools still rely on pages that search engines can find and that other trusted sites mention. GEO adds to SEO. It does not replace it.
What does AIO stand for?
Most often it means AI Overviews, Google's AI-generated summary at the top of some results. Some people also use AIO to mean AI optimisation in general, so check which meaning is intended.
Do I need separate content for each one?
Usually not. One well-structured page that answers real questions clearly, is backed by accurate business details and is mentioned elsewhere on the web can serve all four.
How long does it take to see results?
SEO and AEO changes usually take weeks to a few months to show. AI answers also vary by tool and change often, so measure over time and avoid agencies that promise a fixed outcome.
